People Who Worked At Abercrombie & Fitch In The Early 2000s Have Some Startling Stories To TellBy Nicole Price
Do you have a passion for fashion or are you curious about what it’s like to work in a well-known retail establishment? One of the most well-known clothing brands of the early 2000s is the subject of this article. Working at a major retailer should be a rewarding and educational experience, but unfortunately, this was not the case for the majority of Abercrombie & Fitch employees in the United States. Keep reading to find out why.
Hey, How’s it Goin?
Whatever the manager of this particular A&F shop thought the greeting was, it isn’t particularly warm or inviting at all. Furthermore, the notion that people are hired solely for the purpose of modeling in front of the store and greeting customers is absurd.
This poor woman was yelled at simply for attempting to spice up the horribly monotonous greeting. We wouldn’t be surprised if she decided to leave as a result of her ordeal.
Stay Barefoot or Go Home
As time goes on, we begin to question whether A&F is a clothing store or a military institution. A staff member being sent home or being forced to work barefoot behind the counter because he or she did not wear the appropriate flip-flops is something we have never heard of before in our lives.
What a nightmare situation! Who would want to work in such an environment? We sincerely hope that the unfortunate individual came to his senses and resigned before something even more ridiculous occurred.
The Smell of Nausea
Man, that is way too much cologne for one person. With that much cologne being used in such a small space, you can expect the place to stink. The smell must be nauseating for any shopper who walks through the door! There is no logical reason why you should have to spray your clothes so frequently; just a few sprays per day should be sufficient.
Those who are sensitive to the scent may find it so nauseating that they will never shop there again. That the managers at A&F assign such insignificant tasks to their employees is beyond comprehension.
Sit There & Look Pretty
Given that the primary responsibility of a salesperson is to converse with customers rather than simply do nothing, this piece of advice is somewhat ironic in nature. That the pay is so low is no surprise given that all of the employees are paid for doing absolutely nothing while also appearing attractive.
Who is supposed to assist shoppers if they are not permitted to converse with them? This could potentially result in them losing customers and establishing a negative reputation for the company.
What else should you expect if you only hire people based on their outward appearance? Hookups are as obvious as the concept of having a cluster of attractive people of the opposite or even the same gender.
When people are in a relationship within the workplace, it can be detrimental to the overall environment, and when they break up, it can lead to awkward situations.
These are simply extremely unprofessional requests that also constitute a violation of people’s personal privacy. Employees are also adults, and they should be able to dress however they want as long as it is appropriate and does not interfere with the dress code.
These managers’ requests and demands were completely unethical, and they should be fired. The fact that you are displaying your underwear line and hanging the belt in this manner appears to be extremely unprofessional.
No Facial Hair Allowed
This is a reasonable request following a slew of absurd ones, but it is still incorrect. It is entirely up to the employees to determine how they want to maintain their facial hair because, at the end of the day, it is on their face.
Again, this is a rule of a military nature that we are unable to comprehend. To be sure, the staff should be well-dressed, but a beard does not necessarily detract from this appearance.
No Sales for You
After all, what’s the point of working hard to earn money if you’re only going to use it to buy clothes that you’ll have to wear to work? The prices at A&F are so low that they don’t even allow their employees to wear sale items on the floor, as they prefer for customers to spend their money on full-priced items instead.
This makes no sense because any items sold result in a profit for them regardless of the price. Let’s just hope that u/nathanielj5 decided to leave this job as soon as he started…
Nail and Piercing Police
So, who are these people to tell you what nail polishes you can wear and how many piercings you can have on your body? What do they consider themselves to be? They are nothing more than a clothing brand. Clothing and hairstyles are somewhat understandable, but did they not even allow people to paint their nails in the colors of their choice?
In any case, we can’t imagine what harm a few brightly painted nails could cause. It is no surprise that they have such a high turnover rate. Who would want to work in such an environment?
Exactly when the definition of a nice “natural look” changed to include the words “good looking” or “attractive” is unknown. We’ll never know, I suppose. There’s a good reason why the managers don’t use these adjectives to describe their employees, but anyone who walks into the store will be able to tell what the ideal A&F appearance is right away, regardless of their position.
However, even though there is nothing wrong with having a natural appearance or physique, the brand should consider using a diverse range of people to demonstrate their clothing.
Isn’t it true that he just borrowed it? If it wasn’t theft, we suppose it wasn’t all that bad because he did return it afterward. We mean, how did this go on for such a long period of time without anyone noticing? It’s true, though: why would a low-wage worker spend half of his income on a sweatshirt that isn’t even worth the money?
We’d say that was a wise decision on his part. In any case, would you really want to purchase a sweatshirt if you knew it had been worn by an employee during his eight-hour shifts if you knew it had been worn by a team member during his eight-hour shifts?
Consider being limited to only three or four colors throughout the year. This is a nightmare scenario. Even during the holiday season, this employee was unable to enjoy any level of freedom. Wearing black, which is a wardrobe staple for almost everyone, was also out of the question. What was it that colors did to them at any point?
What we don’t understand is why the managers wouldn’t have their employees dress in a variety of colors, cuts, and sizes for the benefit of the customers, in the hopes that they will be able to picture themselves wearing them. Isn’t that the whole point of having employees dress in the clothing that the company provides for them?
Once again, what is it with A&F and their use of fragrances? What exactly is this irrational obsession? Five spritzes per day should be sufficient to get them through the day. Why do they go so far out of their way? What we’re really curious about is how many bottles of perfume and cologne they must go through in a single week.
It’s almost as if they spend all of their earnings on ordering endless supplies of perfumes and colognes from various suppliers. Consider this a waste of money, especially considering that A&F perfumes and colognes are already a mainstay of the brand’s product line! Not that there’s any need to over-advertise it….
Furthermore, they only want to hire people who have been personally scouted by them, because not all of the natural applicants will meet the brand’s expectations for physical beauty. To go to the lengths of retaining a password solely for this purpose, on the other hand, is mind-boggling to us.
This superficial characteristic of theirs must be eliminated if they are to regain their popularity and achieve success again; otherwise, they will be doomed to a long series of misfortunes for the foreseeable future.
Black Is Illegal
Is it time to bring up the issue of color discrimination once more? Where and how is it possible for a color to be made illegal to wear anywhere in the world? As a matter of fact, they went so far as to say that employees could dress in a very dark navy blue as long as it wasn’t black.
Although we may never understand the reasoning behind these bizarre rules, we are grateful that we have never had to deal with anything like this ourselves in our lives. Our only question is whether A&F even carries any black clothing.
So, who will stay on as an employee when your company requires the entire workforce to expend nearly half of their earnings on the clothes that will be used as their uniforms? The fact that employees are required to purchase their own clothing after being hired is absurd in and of its own right.
However, it appears that the employees have begun to think outside the box. All you have to do is purchase an absurdly large number of gift cards. After a month, you collect your salary and leave the company. Although it does not appear to be the most ethical of options, to each his or her own.
“The Look” Is Missing
That’s downright cruel. For the sake of maintaining a particular appearance, one would have to go to extraordinary lengths to lie. This is a brand that we would never support or work for because it is so shallow and superficial.
If all they want is attractive people, they could simply brand themselves as such, ensuring that everyone is fully aware of their intentions. Nancy was even coerced into lying by the bigoted manager.
All Types of Beauty
We applaud this woman for vowing never to return to the workforce. This is the most egregious form of discrimination because there are many different types of beauty throughout the world. They have the audacity to deny her employment based on the fact that she has natural hair. We assumed they were only interested in a natural appearance.
We are perplexed as to what it is about her hair that they find so unsuitable or unnatural. It is completely inappropriate and unacceptable to engage in this type of behavior. Because they should have known better in today’s world, it’s really no surprise that the brand’s popularity has plummeted in the last few years.
Scouting for Good Looks
This stunt only serves to demonstrate what we’ve been saying about A&F’s standards, and some people may find it creepy as a result. Imagine simply walking around the mall, observing people and making snap judgments about them based on their physical characteristics — and then, upon finding a suitable candidate, offering them a job on the spot.
This may be offensive to the person who received the proposal and may result in a negative perception of the store. The action itself is also immoral because you are basing your decision solely on appearances and not on substance.
Six Pack Mannequins
Abercrombie and Fitch are concerned with the appearance of not only their employees but also of their mannequins, according to the company. These inanimate objects were even provided with six-packs of beer, yes, you read that correctly.
We’re not even playing a joke on you. If you take the clothes off the mannequins, you’ll discover that they all have a six-pack on their backs. Allow that to serve as inspiration for you to join the gym, my friends.
Consider what happens when you base your judgment on appearances rather than qualities or moral character. The managers are left with a sense of insecurity as a result of their products being stolen. However, it is never acceptable to search your employees’ belongings without reasonable grounds for suspicion, especially during their lunch break.
This is extremely embarrassing and insulting of the employees’ hard work and dedication. In addition, the fact that they have minorities who primarily work in the backroom because English isn’t their first language is completely cruel.
This has got to be one of the strangest and most biased ways to treat your employees in the entire world. Making a decision about whether or not your employee deserves a promotion solely on the basis of their appearance is reprehensible on so many levels. It is unethical and unethical to do so.
In order to perform their job duties properly, why would an employee be required to appear in a particular manner? And why do you keep other members of the A&F team hidden away because you don’t believe they represent the A&F brand well enough?
The Look Policy
How did A&F get so obsessed with appearances in the first place? Consider the stress of constantly having to think about what you’re wearing or how you appear. It’s just a store, not the White House, after all!
However, if they are so concerned about what their employees wear, they could simply provide them with clothing, but instead, they will simply establish a dress code as if the employees are high school students. They are also concerned with their appearance, including their hair and nails.
Not Cute Enough
The situation is simply unacceptable! What level of cruelty does this brand exhibit? They have the audacity to fire a girl simply because she did not meet the standard of beauty that they consider appropriate. They also did it in front of a large crowd.
So you can imagine how humiliated and hurt she must have felt as a result. After hearing all of the horrible confessions, it’s difficult to support, shop at, or work for a company that does this. Everyone has the right to a fair shot!
This takes the concept of body shaming to an entirely new level. It seems absurd to us that this company believes they have a say in what is considered beautiful and what is not beautiful. First and foremost, everyone is unique and beautiful in their own way, and they should not be made to feel any differently.
Second, A&F should probably begin accepting and hiring people based on their character and work ethic, rather than their qualifications for the position. This brand, as well as its managers, are clearly behind the times in a number of areas. After all, we’re talking about the year 2021 here.
The way A&F treats its employees is most likely a contributing factor to its high employee turnover rate. Not only do they pay significantly less than the industry standard, but they also evaluate their employees based on their physical appearance.
Some employees, on the other hand, who manage to keep their jobs for an extended period of time may gain more power. He was one of the fortunate ones, as was this young man. Many people mistook him for a manager, which he was not. He must have enjoyed himself.
Sandals Are Mandatory
You’d think that a large corporation would be more concerned with their employees’ comfort than with their appearance. Why would you subject your employees to such suffering? There’s really no reason to require flat sandals when there are so many other options available — and it can’t be good for the health of people who are on their feet all day during their shifts.
Furthermore, only extremely tight pants and jeggings are permitted, which can actually be harmful to the health of the employees who wear them. A&F, get up and go!
The Large Is a Medium or Small
Nowadays, it is absolutely necessary for a brand to cater to customers of all sizes in order to remain viable and profitable. Nonetheless, at Abercrombie and Fitch, they don’t value diversity — their sizes only go up to large, and even that size is often too small for most women.
There is a belief that they should only serve people who are exceptionally petite. Ultimately, we can only hope that this company is aware of how dissatisfied customers are and how embarrassed its employees are.
No Shirts Please
They even put the poor models through torture. If you ever happen to pass by an Abercrombie & Fitch store, you’re almost certain to see a shirtless man standing in front of the establishment. We are unable to see how this will assist the brand in finding a suitable model because, as far as we are aware, these people are hired to display the clothes, not their abs, which we believe is counterproductive.
Rather than asking the model(s) to remove their shirt for photos on the spot, the manager could simply request that they bring their own photos rather than asking them to remove their shirt right away.
It’s not like everyone walks around with a stopwatch on their person all of the time, so the requirement that you approach a shopper within 15 seconds of them walking into the store causes us anxiety.
“Hey,” as if simply saying “Hey” isn’t bad enough. In response to the question, “How’s it going?” the manager came up with an even stranger tagline/sales pitch, which includes asking the customer if they have ever tried the jeans before claiming that they will look like a star if they decide to put on a pair of the jeans. Cheesy. Strange. Simply put, no.
Ladders to Get Jeans
We’re not sure what the reasoning is behind this, are you? Why would they keep the normal-sized jeans cinched so tightly around the waist? It would be extremely inconvenient and inefficient if a customer walked into the store and asked for a pair of jeans.
In a size that would require any short employee to climb up a ladder to obtain from the rack. What a pain in the neck! Are they afraid of theft, or do they simply enjoy torturing their employees? We’re baffled.
We’re perplexed by these establishments and their proprietors. Is it possible for someone who is appointed as the store manager of this brand to lose sight of what is normal? These poor employees, with their pierced ears…
How do they even manage to hear each other or even the customers over that loud music anyway? This store has an undeniably crazy obsession with scents.
Smelling Like a Guy
How else would an employee start smelling like the store just because they work there for six hours a day? Imagine what this poor staff member has to go through just to get rid of that horrendously overpowering smell.
Although it’s unlikely to be a major inconvenience for male employees, being a woman who smells like a man must be a major inconvenience for everyone else.
No Brains, Only Beauty
Our minds are blown away by the thought of these managers devoting so much of their time and resources solely to recruiting a specific type of person, even if they are not the brightest.
Why go through all of this trouble just to have workers who are inefficient? assume this is what happens when you devote all of your attention to “attractive” individuals at the expense of intelligent individuals.
It appears that this is the result of hiring primarily attractive (according to A&F standards) individuals — the only people who come into the store are a bunch of creeps who are only interested in your employees and not in the products you are selling. It occurs to me that the employees may even be deterring customers from purchasing the products they are supposed to be selling.
Moreover, while it’s nice to be desired and beautiful, it’s likely to feel downright strange if it happens at your place of employment. Nonetheless, it’s extremely endearing that this poster posed for a photograph with a young admirer.
These suggestions will almost certainly land you a position as a sales associate at your favorite retail establishment, but we must warn you that it is not all rainbows and butterflies once you begin working there. The most important factor in obtaining a position there is to be attractive — and only after that does everything else come into play.
If you adhere to the dress code and wear only natural makeup, you should be fine to go. Give straightforward answers in a positive and friendly manner to the straightforward questions. If that’s the case, you’ll almost certainly get in!
After learning about how cruel this company can be, as well as how they treat their employees, we would also like to express our opposition to A&F. However, stealing is not an effective method of making a statement.
You are a thief no matter how much you help the poor and the needy through your theft. If you really want to express your dissatisfaction with the brand, then organize a strike with your coworkers!
No A&B, No Abs
Consider the amount of willpower this individual possessed in order to work at Abercrombie & Fitch. They actually lost weight as a result of their work there. However, after seeing what it was like to actually work there, the individual must have been extremely dissatisfied and have lost all motivation as a result.
And we can see why that is the case. We can only hope that this poster found happiness in a different environment. It’s important to remember that you are beautiful no matter what size or shape you are!
We have to make a little dark confession, we must admit. Working in retail is enjoyable because you get to interact with a diverse range of people who come in and out on a regular basis. Some employees, despite the fact that it may be uncomfortable, end up having a good time with customers in their own dark-humored way on occasion.
When a customer asked her an either-or question, this particular poster would suggest the uglier of the two options. Really, the managers should have been a little more aware of the importance of this little game….
A Waste of Time
A high turnover rate at Abercrombie and Fitch leads to the company giving all of the hours to certain employees while leaving others “on call.” It’s understandable that this poster felt as if they were wasting his or her time.
In order to avoid having to wait around for a call indicating that they may or may not be working today, we recommend that they take a job at any other store where their time is valued, such as a restaurant.
Hospitalized for Scents
Consider the possibility of being rushed to the hospital simply because of the scent of a store. Sadly, that became a reality for this unfortunate employee when they were forced to be hospitalized after suffering an allergic reaction to the perfumes used by Abercrombie & Fitch.
Try to picture the situation if this had occurred to one of your customers. As a result, A&F should perhaps reconsider their obsession with colognes and perfumes, which would have made quite an impression on me.
Good Money, Bad Experience
It’s a little surprising that someone who worked for Abercrombie and Fitch wasn’t actually dissatisfied with their pay, but rather seemed to be satisfied with it in general. Given the fact that they didn’t appear to be working with the most pleasant people.
They must have possessed great patience. They are only concerned with people’s outward appearances, and they judge them solely on that basis. The managers don’t appear to be much better in this regard.
The proper way to deal with immature and irrational customers should be documented in a handbook. We’re talking about the fact that the store is officially named Abercrombie & Fitch, not American Eagle.
So, what led this particular customer to believe that he could simply return his A&E t-shirt to an A&F store was beyond me. Fine. Both stores appear to be very similar when written with initials, but we believe people have more common sense!
Love for Food Court
Again, this is a surprising statement, given that everyone else constantly complains about A&F’s low wage. Still, why would anyone want to put in their time at a place they despise so much? We’re not sure if the food court was worth it, but it certainly was.
Similarly, if a job opportunity was located directly across the street from a food court, we would be sold on it. However, it would put a significant dent in our bank account. So let’s hope that wasn’t the case for this particular individual.
